Inspired by the Protestant Reformation, many religious Separatists found themselves at odds with the Church of England in the early 1600s some so much so that they faced persecution for their beliefs. Many of the Pilgrims of the Mayflower came from this group, after initially fleeing to the Netherlands because of its more relaxed attitudes towards faith. Aboard the Mayflower , this group would refer to themselves as the Saints, whereas the crew and other passengers were known as the Strangers. All of them, however, were referred to as Pilgrims.
